The honest answer

You could learn Spanish with an app. You could find a tutor on a marketplace platform for a few dollars an hour. You could join a group class at a language school. All of those options exist, and some of them are fine.
But if you want to make real, lasting progress — quickly, with clear structure and expert guidance — those options have limits. Apps do not correct your pronunciation or explain why a grammar rule works. Marketplace tutors are often native speakers with no formal training in language teaching. Group classes move at the pace of the slowest student.

Natalislang was built on a different premise: that every student deserves a private, personalised experience with a trained specialist, using materials that are genuinely effective. That premise has not changed in 39 years.

Where we come from.

Where the name comes from

On Christmas Eve 1894, members of Hermann Eberhard's expedition discovered an unknown river flowing into the fjords of Chilean Patagonia. Because the discovery fell so close to the nativity of Christ, they named it in Latin: Río Natalis — from natalis, meaning birth.

Over the following decades, the Latin word softened into Spanish: Natales. When the Chilean government founded a town at the mouth of that river in 1911, it became Puerto Natales — one of the most breathtaking places on earth.

It was there that the school was born. Mirtha opened the first language institute in the region and named it Natalis Language Centre — carrying the river's name and its meaning forward. With time, and with students from around the world, it became simply Natalislang.

Even the friendly mouse who travels through the pages of our course book carries that name: Natalio. A small explorer, just like those who first discovered the river.

Built from scratch. Rebuilt twice.

Natalislang began not as a Spanish school but as an English institute in a small tourist town in Chile. It was the 1980s, and there was nothing like it in the area. Then one day a British physicist named Richard Newton walked in and said: you should be teaching Spanish too.

That suggestion changed everything. Materials were ordered from Santiago and Spain. The first Spanish students arrived. And what started as a side project gradually became the main event.

Over the years the school moved to Santiago and opened a branch in Valparaíso. Both grew. Then came the social unrest of 2019, followed immediately by the pandemic. Everything had to close. Students disappeared overnight.

Most schools did not survive. Natalislang did — rebuilt again, leaner and more focused, with online classes becoming a real part of the offer for the first time. The books that had been developed over decades kept getting better. The teaching kept evolving.

Today the school is smaller and more dedicated than ever. Every student gets direct attention. Every programme is designed with care. Nothing is generic.
